Woot : One Day, One Deal SM
Woot.com is an interesting site. Everyday it has a different item for sale, usually at a pretty reasonable price. I’ve bought quite a few things from them over the years including a couple of those toy remote-control helicopters for my son for $9.99.
I recently bought a Netbook for my wife. We’ll see how it goes. She only uses email and the internet so it should be okay for a 2nd computer.
The Snail
A man hears a knock at the door and opens it. There is nobody there. He looks down and sees a snail on the doorstep. He picks it up and throws it out into the yard.
About three years later he gets another knock at the door. He opens it, there is nobody there. He looks down and sees a snail on the doorstep. The snail looks up at him and says, “what the hell was that all about???”
Lemaro Thompson wrote this review of my book, How to Make Colleges Want You on, Amazon.com. It is the first review that didn’t give me five stars (he gave me four), but I think it is one of the best reviews posted. Very well written and thoughtful. He clearly read the book carefully and took the message to heart.
Thanks Lemaro!

It’s really weird how well this works!
1) Pick your favorite number between 1-9
2) Multiply by 3 then
3) Add 3
(4) Then again multiply by 3 (I’ll wait while you get the calculator….)
(5) You’ll get a 2 or 3 digit number….
(6) Add the digits together

CommitmentNow.com Article
Here is a link to a CommitmentNow.com article about my book.
I wasn’t actually interviewed for the article. They sent me a list of questions and I typed out the answers. So, aside from the questions themselves, I wrote the article.
Perfect!
Pandora.com
Pandora Internet Radio is an online radio service based on the Music Geonome Project which was some research that identified similarities among songs.
You input a couple of your favorite songs or singers and it will automatically pick other songs and other singers that sound similar. It is free and quite cool.
Trade Show Budget Worksheet
I’m working on a book about Trade Shows. Here is a budget worksheet that I may use as a reference.
Anson’s Lil’ Grams Babybook
A friend of mine, Daniel Arsenault, did the original design for the site Lilgrams.com. I was invited to be a beta user today and I set up an account for my son, Anson.
It’s designed to be an online babybook. A lot of the features are still in development, but it does have a nice interface.
The final design was done by http://www.vikkid.com/ in India.
2009 New Venture Challenge
I coached Masala Wala for the University of Chicago’s New Venture Challenge in 2009. They split second place with two other teams. It was a concept for an Indian food restarant. I thought they did a very nice job.
The winners were Bump Technologies that made an iPod application and a company called Nine Naturals that makes shampoo for pregnant women. They were tough competitors.
Since winning the NVC in 2003 I’ve coached six teams. Four have won first place, one has won second place, and one didn’t follow my advice. The other winning teams were:
- Vicarious Communication, Inc (my own company)
- Collectica.com
- Braintree Financial
- CaptainU.com
The New Venture Challenge is a great experience– certainly the most educational part of my MBA.
I also coached the Global NVC in London in 2009. I spent several hours with about 20 teams.
Outright.com
Outright.com is a great site. It is a very simple bookkeeping program for organizations and small businesses. It’s completely free and easy to use. I’ve started a lot of little online businesses that have low requirements when it comes to keeping the books. Quickbooks is an overkill to say the least.
Outright.com tracks income and expenses with an easy-to-use interface.
Thumbs up!
By the way, did you know that the word “bookkeeper” or “bookkeeping” is the only word in the english language that has three sets of double letters in a row? Most people guess Mississippi- silly people!
